Introduction
OVEC will provide all comprehensive services for adult education in three counties: Gallatin, Shelby, and Trimble. There are three levels of instruction available: literacy, adult basic education (ABE), and GED. Trained tutors on a one-to-one basis provide service for the literacy level at a time and location agreeable to the tutor and the adult learner. Pairs are matched and tracked by the literacy coordinator. Service for the ABE and GED levels is provided by paid instructors utilizing volunteers when necessary. The programs collaborate with other Adult Education providers in the counties to meet the needs of all adult learners.
Components
The following components will be incorporated in all three levels of instruction.
- FAMILY LITERACY. Instruction in parenting and nurturing skills, and parent/child activities will assist parents in becoming more actively involved in the education of their children. Family literacy instruction will engage in weekly volunteer experiences.
- ESL. Instruction as needed for adults with limited-English proficiency.
- LIFE SKILLS. Adult learners working separately at varying levels on their academic skills will often meet together for group instruction in everyday living tasks, and will receive individual follow-up and support in these areas.
- EMPLOYMENT SKILLS. Instruction and materials that focus on career awareness, obtaining employment, upgrading employment, functioning on the job, and upgrading work place skills.
- TRANSITION TO POST-SECONDARY TRAINING. Staff will make adult learners aware of, and assist them in transitioning to, vocational/technical schools and institutions of higher education.
